What are the Side Effects of CBD?

What are the Side Effects of CBD Oil?

As a responsible consumer, you’re likely curious of whether there are any side effects of cannabidiol (CBD) oil. We understand that you want to know how CBD oil will make you feel and any effects it could have before you incorporate the supplement into your and your family’s daily nutritional routine.

No Psychoactive High

First, it’s important to understand that CBD oil will not cause you to experience a euphoric effect, or “high.” Because CBD oil comes from cannabis (hemp), a common misconception is that it is psychoactive. The truth is, both hemp and marijuana are cannabis plants. Unlike medical marijuana products, CBD oil that’s derived from hemp, however, contains only trace amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the well-known psychoactive cannabinoid.

CBD oil is therefore completely non-psychoactive. This means that, as opposed to THC, it not will adversely affect:

  • Sensory awareness
  • Perception
  • Consciousness
  • Reaction time
  • Behavior

This is because hemp CBD oil is derived from hemp, a type of cannabis that contains only up to 0.3 percent THC — nearly 33 times less than the least potent marijuana.

CBD even has anti-psychoactive properties, making it capable of countering the euphoric effects of the psychoactive cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC elicits a high by binding with the endocannabinoid system’s cannabinoid 1 receptor (CB1), but CBD blocks the receptor and prevents it from binding with THC.

What Side Effects Does CBD Have?

Derived from cannabis plants like hemp, cannabinoids such as CBD interact with your native endocannabinoid system. This central system’s responsibility is to maintain the body’s homeostasis for a wide array of systems, including sleep, mood, anxiety, pain, appetite, and immune response. Each day, our outside environment influences your systems, causing them to fluctuate. The endocannabinoid system is constantly working to keeping them in balance. CBD and other cannabinoids support the efforts of this naturally occurring endocannabinoid system.

CBD is thought to be well-tolerated and safe for human consumption. According to WebMD, “CBD doses of up to 300 mg daily have been used safely for up to 6 months. Higher doses of 1200-1500 mg daily have been used safely for up to 4 weeks.” There have been some reports of dry mouth, low blood pressure, lightheadedness, and drowsiness, the health information site reports.

A research review investigating CBD side effects and safety found that CBD had no adverse physiological effect on the following:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Body temperature
  • Glucose levels
  • pH levels
  • Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and bloodstream
  • Red blood cell volume
  • Time it takes for food to leave stomach and travel through the intestines
  • Vomiting action
  • Potassium and sodium levels

Daily Servings That Work For You

While there are no known adverse CBD oil side effects and it’s shown to be well tolerated even at higher doses, when starting a new CBD oil supplement routine it is suggested that you start with a low potency and gradually increase your intake of CBD as you best see fit. This will help you dial in the daily CBD serving that works best for you.

Once you figure out the CBD levels you’d like to obtain each day, begin below that number. Start with a few drops daily or a product containing lower milligrams. Every week, gradually work your way up and monitor how you feel.

When you reach your ideal daily serving size, you can then decide whether to stay where you are or to continue increasing. This method will help you find the right serving of CBD that’s best for your own endocannabinoid system.
